the second release from producer eomac’s new dublin-based label eotrax comes from nomadic irish producer lair. this is an exciting step for the label, moving away from the dancefloor into more diverse, eclectic territory. lair is a producer far from the norm, especially for those releasing on an electronic music label. she classifies herself as a composer, producer, vocalist, artist, sound-healer and yoga teacher. with a diverse background that includes singing classical and traditional material shes expanded her artistic approach into a diverse web-like multi-disciplinarian approach in keeping with her nomadic life. currently she creates electronic music, contemporary classical music and healing music under a variety of alias including laura kilty and luminousounds (for healing music). she is also in the duo noeverything with eomac. in her words my lair music is how i see the world - this one and others channeled - expressed through layers of my vocals which i shape electronically. the music has elements of mysticism, sacred geometry, energy, sound with intention and just sounds i love formed to make music i love. i see music as i create it. i work with lots of layers - for me its like creating an aural representation of the image i see. these layers of sound can be found in her debut self-titled ep in the deep, ritualistic drones of invoke and meld on the a-side, and the more concise rhythmical patterns of searching in circles on the flip.

during the last ice age glaciers slowly carved away the landscape creating mineral rich sediment. for hundreds of thousands of years melt water carried this fine-grained sediment downstream to parts of north america. in some areas strong winds carried this sediment and deposited it forming a network of ridges and dunes. these deposits of loose silty wind-blown, or aeolian, sediment are called loess. flash forward to the present, and the duo of clay emerson and ian pullman may seem to have gone the way of the glaciers and all but disappeared. instead, their signature loose aural silt has been slowly and methodically accumulating and now makes up their new full-length pocosin. others may have no point of reference and pocosin is a welcome introduction to the sound of loess, in a mere blink of an eye from when they began.

monument builders is the new album from loscil, the ambient/electronic project of prolific composer scott morgan. it was primarily created on sample-based instruments in morgan ’,s century-old vancouver home. like that aged space, this music is also rough-hewn, with rickety samples of boiling kettles and resonant moving air. recordings from a vintage micro-cassette recorder contribute distortion, rattles and textures that serve as both percussion and abstract aural color.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

2011 is set to be a huge year for yousef, and arguably his strongest yet in the production field. after spending much of 2010 recording remixes and productions for other leading labels yousef has come back super-strong on his own seminal circus recordings proven here if needed by his latest vinyl production. it is centered on a very simple premise. taking 2 pieces of music and recreating them with yousefs indiscernibly brilliant club night in mind. a resolutely dance floor-focused ep, that combine to create a unique aural tapestry representative of the circus and yousefs own musical evolution. each is an intricate and heartfelt paean of love to circus and the huge impact it has had on both clubland and yousefs career for the last almost nine years, with the clubs birthday approaching this september. yousef says that, >the ep is a special project for me and one that is indicative of the way im progressing. getting to re-shape these tracks from some of my most respected peers has been a great opportunity to craft them with that special circus sound<

damon bell arrives on dba with a debut three-track ep that delves deep into the musical influences that shape his sound. best known for his output on fellow oaklander aybees deepblak recordings - where he holds the title chief connoisseur- bell has won ardent admirers both with his string of eps and with last year s debut lp blues for the libyan , in addition to releases on r&s sub-label meda fury. the trio of tracks that make up the ankh boogie ep find bell returning to the dynamic african rhythms of his most floor-friendly work, with live instrumentation layered over an electronic pulse. having had his start as a teenager obsessing over afro-cuban jazz and jazz fusion, his long-standing devotion to learning and adapting the music s polyrhythmic sensibilities in his own music, coupled with the voyages of sound deepblak is known for, result in a unique collage of sounds that at various moments can recall the likes of joe claussell, dj qu and ron trent. where the title track plays with sun-kissed melodies and percussive elements, the b1, aural afrek, goes into darker techno territory, while b2 cut time for change is an organ-led house workout.

hot off a couple of 12” from topher horn, rocksteady disco follows up with its first compilation featuring a heap of heavily sampled originals from more well-known editors. pontchartrain leads the release off with a summer-inspired aural prozac number, just in time for this june release. next up is notorious detroit editor lafleur, busting out this original milky-smooth detroit boogie house production. a slight little rearrangement from rocksteady disco label boss peter croce makes this one a bit smoother for the djs. lyon, france’s g2s kicks off the flip with a big-bottomed stomper reminiscent of some mcde ‘raw cuts’. pontchartrain book-ends this release with a track that puts the ‘rocksteady’ in rocksteady disco, with heavy analog-meets-electro drum programming and complete with pontchartrain on vocoder duties. hand numbered edition of 500 copies with dl code.

a colourful storm inaugurates its vinyl label with a reissue of a long lost oz classic. formed by brian hall in 1982, denial originally appeared on the legendary m squared label, home to industrial and wave outfits systematics, spk, scattered order and the makers of the dead travel fast. until now, hall s own work has only surfaced once - in 2012, under his aural indifference moniker on the minimal wave tapes volume two compilation. here, denial s version of the mamas and papas classic, and melancholy the weatherman are presented in their original format and deservedly remastered. a colourful storm is a label co-run by moopie, who contributed the second mix cd for silent servant s jealous god imprint.
